ALDs are described starting on page 12 of 223-6875-1_IBM-SMS.pdf pp 12ff. Top line: Page part number (1-7), Title, Machine number (95-98), Logic page number (109-118). Second line is blank. There are thirteen groups of columns, denoted 1 to 13. 1. 1-15 Input signals 2. 16-21 Traces 1 3. 22-31 Box 2 4. 32-38 Traces 2 5. 39-48 Box 3 6. 49-55 Traces 3 7. 56-65 Box 4 8. 66-72 Traces 4 9. 73-82 Box 5 10. 83-89 Traces 5 11. 90-99 Box 6 12. 100-106 Traces 6 13. 107-120 Output signals In column groups 1 and 13, the first two rows are nomenclature, in columns 1-15 and 107-120. The signal type is specified in the first of those rows that is not blank as +/- A-Z. The second row cannot be blank. The third row is a logic page notation in columns 2-11 or 111-120. Columns 12-13 and 109-110 contain a line. Columns 14-15 or 107-108 contain a line, or an asterisk followed by a letter or digit, to refer to an edge-card index at the bottom of the page. Horizontal layout of SMS cards is in nine groups of rows, denoted below the SMS box by A through J (I is not used). A. 3-20 B. 21-38 C. 39-56 D. 57-74 E. 75-92 F. 93-110 G. 111-128 H. 129-146 J. 147-164 An SMS box in column group 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 occupies ten columns, labeled 0..9. Columns 0,1 and 8,9 provide space for two characters for connector labels. Columns 2 and 7 contain the vertical edges of the boxes. In columns 2 and 7 of a box, at a connection, the segment of the vertical outline can be superceded by a "lozenge" character (asterisk in 223-6875-1_IBM-SMS.pdf p 15) to indicate a coaxial cable or twisted-pair connection. The label of a connection consists of two letters in A-R. The second letter indicates a tie-down connection. So a vertical trace cannot be in columns 0..9, except that two adjacent boxes in the same column group can be connected by dashed lines in columns 3 and 6 to indicate an extender or two-card trigger. Rows 1-12 of column groups 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 never contain traces, even of there is no box. Each SMS row group is 18 rows, with up to six groups of inputs in column group 1, a box (or not) in column groups 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, and up to six rows of outputs in column group 13. Within a group, rows are labeled 1..18. Row 1 can be used for traces. Row 2 appears not to be used. Rows 4-13 are the SMS boxes in column groups 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, and traces only in column groups 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. Rows 1 and 13-18 can be used for horizontal traces. SMS box: 3. Centered 10-character Title. 4. Horizontal line. 5. Symbol (SMS card type). 6. Machine function index (e.g. TD=tape drive; two dots or BA for the basic circuit.) 7. Mode NPRSTUMWXYZV Fig 13 page 15. 8. Modular I: FFME F = frame 01-99, M = module A B, E = Engr Change level A-Z. Modular II: FFGE F = frame 01-99, G = gate A-D, E = Engr Change level A-Z. 9. Modular I: GCRR G = gate 1-8, C = column A-F, R = row 01-26 Modular II: HRCC H = Chassis 1-4, R = row A-K, Column = 01-28. 10. Card Code AA-ZZ, Cap Connection AA-ZZ or -- if not used. 11. Line with two characters of block configuration. 12. Box coordinates on the page. After at least one blank line, up to 18 rows of edge connectors are listed, six per line (166-183). Each edge connector is preceded by a six-character horizontal line if it is not mentioned in a note for an input or output connection, or two blanks, an asterisk, a one-character note reference, and a two character horizontal line. Edge connector nomenclature occupies eight columns. Before the second through sixth edge connector listing on each line, there are five blanks. So an edge-connector line occupies at most 106 characters. After at least one blank line there is a block containing up to 14 rows (185-198) of comments in columns 1-39, and up to four groups of engineering change numbers. Each group of engineering change numbers begins with a blank and a vertical line, a tag number, a space, an eight-character date, a space, and a seven-character engineering change number. The total height of one drawing is 16.5 inches (34 1403 sprocket holes). It appears that ALDs were printed at 12 lines per inch, or 198 lines per page.
