beginning with a letter or ) or *, consructs an address, but apprarently
not using MA.  no single offset can be more than three characters.  Alpha
offsets are treated as numeric, according to the 1401 rules for
arithmetic.  Multiple indexing results in first index specified.

beginning with a digit, value is the text of the operand -- no arithmetic
or indexing.

Always creates an address, apparently using MA.  Multiple indexing results
